TextWrangler Stops Update, Replaced by BBEdit

Bare Bones Software, the company of TextWrangler and BBEdit, announced that they decided to retire TextWrangler from current product line, which means Textwrangler will stop update for the next version macOS, and anyone who are interested this tool are encouraged to use BBEdit, a more powerful code editor, as a replacement.

TextWrangler is a free text and code editor for Mac OS X. It was introduced in 2003 as the enhanced version of BBEdit Lite. Though Bare Bones will not release a new version of TextWrangler for future versions of macOS, the app still continue to be funtional as long as the current version is compatible with the new version of macOS .

As its elder sibling, BBEdit is a professional, award-wining HTML and text editor, specially designed for the use of web authors and software developers. The paid version provides an abundance of high-performance features for editing, searching, and manipulation of text. BBEdit 11.6 has been officially released on last July, and there are many new features and enhancements available in this version.

The latest version of BBEdit, requiring Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later, can be downloaded directly from its official site. BBEdit v10.5 and TextWrangler are currently available in Mac App Store, yet the BBEdit 11.6 is not. If you have purchased BBEdit 10 via App Store before, you are eligible to get BBEdit 11 at a discounted price ($29.99).

BBEdit offers a 30-day trial period, during which its full feature set is available. After the demo period, you can continue to use BBEdit for free, yet the feature set will be revised. The modified version still incorporates all TextWrangler features, but other exclusive features can only be re-enabled for use with a purchase license ($49.99).

Bare Bones Software reassures its user that the company will continue to develop BBEdit and make it fully supported on the the upcoming macOS update.
