Last month Microsoft released the Windows 10 Creators update for PC and mobile platforms. At that time the Boot Camp in macOS did not support the media-free installation of Windows 10 Creator update, and Mac users can only install the Anniversary Update first and then perform the latest update in Boot Camp.

Recently Apple rolled out the macOS Sierra10.12.5 update, which added “support for media-free installation of Windows 10 Creator Update using Boot Camp”. This system update fixes many security vulnerabilities, and the company recommended all Mac users to download and install macOS Sierra10.12.5 update for security purpose.

According the the accompanying release notes, the macOS Sierra10.12.5, which is the fifty major update since the operating system was released in September of 2016, improves the security, stability and compatibility of your Mac. The update mainly:

  • Fixes an issue where audio may stutter when played through USB headphones
  • Enhances compatibility of the Mac App Store with future software updates
  • Adds support for media-free installation of Windows 10 Creators Update using Boot Camp
  • Adds support for more digital camera RAW formats.
  • Resolves an issue, affecting some enterprise and education customers, that may cause the system date to be set to the year 2040.
  • Prevents a potential kernel panic when starting up from a NetInstall image. This fix is available when starting up from a NetInstall image created from the macOS 10.12.5 installer.

The macOS 10.12.5 update can be accessed through the App Store on all Macs that support Sierra, and it should also be available on the macOS download pages.

For those who are still running older versions of macOS, the security fixes have also been released in the additional update (2017-002) for both Yosemite and EI Capitan.

To check for Mac software updates, open the App Store app on your Mac, then click Updates in the toolbar. If updates are available, click the Update buttons to download and install them. If you don’t have the App Store on your Mac, you can still get updates by accessing to the Software Update pane from the Apple menu.
